The Africa Stone: how petrified Cape hyrax urine became a noble material
One of the most beautiful marine scents I know contains fossilized urine, thousands of years old. This is not provocation or a joke. It is one of the most incredible stories in perfumery, that of a material that is at once a precious ingredient and an archive of Earth's history. Hold on, because you will never smell certain perfumes the same way again.
The Africa Stone, the stone that is not a stone
This material is called hyraceum. It is also nicknamed the Africa Stone. And to understand what it is, you have to talk about a small animal from southern Africa, the Cape hyrax.
The hyrax is a little creature the size of a rabbit that lives in colonies among rocks in southern and eastern Africa. It looks remarkably like a large marmot, so people naturally take it for a rodent. A mistake, and not a small one. The hyrax is not a rodent. It belongs to a separate order, the hyracoids, and its position in the tree of life is genuinely astonishing: it is part of the same large lineage as the elephant and the manatee, that of the Afrotherians. A cousin of the elephant, then, barely larger than a hare. Nature has such oddities. To be precise, recent studies make the manatee a closer relative of the elephant than the hyrax, but all three do share the same common origin, which remains dizzying when you look at the animal.
A stone made of time
Here is where the story becomes extraordinary. Hyrax colonies always use the same rock cavities to urinate and defecate. The same ones, generation after generation, like communal latrines passed down as an inheritance.
So it accumulates. For decades, centuries, sometimes millennia. And under the effect of a dry climate, sun and time, those deposits dry, harden, polymerize and eventually petrify. They become a dark, compact, almost glassy mass that resembles fossilized asphalt or stone. This is hyraceum, and this is what is harvested, directly from rock shelters, without ever touching an animal.
Some of these deposits have been dated to over fifty thousand years. And they interest more than just perfumers. Scientists study them closely, because by layering, they have recorded, like tree rings or polar ice cores, the climate and vegetation of the whole region through the ages. The same material is therefore both a perfumery ingredient and a true book of Earth's history, a natural climatic archive. I find this double nature moving.
